WHAT IS LOW VOC?

And why do I Care?

Voice of consumer? Victim of crime? Veterans outreach center?

Good guesses, but we’re talking about volatile organic compounds, more commonly referred to as VOC.

Low VOC is good
Low VOC refers to volatile organic compounds that are not harmful to the environment and humans. It usually refers to paints and other products like sealants, adhesives and cleaners. Low VOCs are better for the environment and you.

Why is it important
Low VOC goes beyond those chemical products. It also exists in the charcoal you use for grilling, so you want to be sure you are using all-natural charcoal with low VOC.

The newest product on the market to deliver a healthier cook with low VOC is the HERO Grill. In fact, recent environmental testing shows HERO Charcoal Pods produce 73% less emissions than traditional instant-light charcoal.

The single use, biodegradable charcoal pod was tested for emissions and volatile organic compounds by Horizon Air Measurement services as part of certification by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for compliance with South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule 1174. The HERO Charcoal Pods showed an emission rate of 0.00541b VOC/Start, which is 73% less than the standard.

Reducing the footprint
“As an environmentally aware company, we worked to ensure the HERO Grill provides a great experience for the outdoor enthusiast while also being sensitive to reducing emissions and protecting our environment,” said Davis Knox, Fire & Flavor CEO and founder. “The CARB testing shows that we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint.”

SCAQMD’s Governing Board adopted Rule 1174, Control of Volatile Organic Compound Emissions from the Ignition of Barbecue Charcoal, in 1990. It became effective in 1992 and imposes an emission limit of 0.020 pound of volatile organic compounds (VOC) per start resulting from barbecue charcoal ignition. All products used for igniting barbecue charcoal (other than electric starters, chimneys using paper tinder, natural gas or propane) require testing to certify compliance before they can be supplied, offered for sale, or sold within the District's jurisdiction.

HERO’s uniform charcoal stacking, lack of petroleum product additives and one time use mean less smoke, low VOC and no wasted charcoal. It’s good for the environment and great for your next cookout!
